Estimating is the process of looking into the future and trying to predict project costs and resource requirements. Studies indicate that one of the major reasons for the failure of construction contracting firms is incorrect and unrealistic estimating and bidding practices. If 20 estimators or contractors were furnished the same set of plans and specs and told to prepare an estimate of costs and resources, it would be safe to assume that there would not be more than 2 estimates in the entire 20 that had been prepared on the same basis or from the same units.
